Clearing the Runway: How I Use Hypnotherapy to Help Ground My Clients’ Fear of Flying

“Prepare the cabin for take-off” says a voice over the speaker!

Does this sound like you? …

You book a dream holiday, but instead of excitement, your stomach instantly drops into a pit of dread.

Weeks before a flight, the 2:00 am intrusive thoughts start. On the plane, your knuckles turn white while gripping the armrest.

Logic doesn’t help.  Your conscious mind knows the statistics – that flying is one of the safest ways to travel – but the “brain alarm” doesn’t care about statistics; it thinks in worst-case scenarios. If you are desperate to reclaim your holidays, you may be ready to try clinical hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy as a Treatment for Fear of Flying both Online and Face to Face in Perth

As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, working online across the world, I often get asked about Fear of Flying, so I felt it’s time to put together a raw, honest Q&A about how retraining your subconscious mind through hypnotherapy can allow you to finally enjoy the skies.

Q: I’m terrified I’ll lose control. I’m a control freak. Does hypnotherapy mean the therapist controls my mind?

A: This was my biggest worry! I pictured someone waving a pocket watch and making me cluck like a chicken. In reality, hypnosis is just a state of deeply relaxed, hyper-focused attention—very similar to getting completely lost in a great book or daydreaming on a long drive.

You are completely awake, aware, and in total control the entire time. The hypnotherapist is just a guide, helping you quiet your loud conscious mind so you can communicate with your subconscious. You cannot be forced to do or believe anything that goes against your will.

Q: Why doesn’t “knowing” planes are safe stop the panic?

A: Because fear doesn’t live in your logical, conscious brain—it lives in your subconscious. Your subconscious is like software running an old protective program.

If your brain has linked flying with danger—whether from a previous turbulent flight, an anxious parent, or watching a scary movie—it triggers a literal “fight-or-flight” panic response to keep you safe. Hypnotherapy allows you to bypass the logic barrier and directly update that old, glitchy software with calm, rational associations.

Q: What actually happens during a session?

A: Every session starts with an open chat about your exact triggers. For some people, it is the sound of the engines changing during takeoff and, very often feeling of turbulence.

Once we identify those, I will gently guide you into a very comfortable, physically relaxed state. While relaxed, we used mental rehearsal. I help you visualise the entire journey in micro-steps: packing, checking in, walking down the jetway, hearing the engines, and feeling a few bumps—all while keeping your body perfectly calm. By practising the trip safely in my mind, your nervous system learns that it didn’t need to sound the alarm on the real flight.

[Old Subconscious Pattern] ➡️ Engine Noise / Bumps ➡️ THREAT! ➡️ Panic Attack 🚨

[New Hypnotherapy Pattern] ➡️ Engine Noise / Bumps ➡️ Normal Lift ➡️ Stay Calm 🧘‍♂️

Q: How many sessions will it take? I have a trip coming up!

A: Hypnotherapy is remarkably fast because it targets the root cause rather than just managing symptoms. Often, one session is enough to see significant results, although for some people, it can take more sessions, depending on your fear to see significant results.

Most of my clients feel a massive shift after the first session. If you have an upcoming trip, it’s best to flag the date with me so that we can structure your sessions right up to your departure.

Q: Can it completely cure me?

A: The shift can be life-changing. The claustrophobia and raw panic can completely leave.

And you can begin to love flying and enjoy the amazing places there are to see in this wonderful world of ours.

Next time you’re on a plane and it hits some turbulence, instead of your heart racing and thinking “this is it,” your brain can automatically trigger the new suggestions we can plant:

“This is just like a car driving over a bumpy road or a ship riding waves”. Now you can sleep instead of feeling anxious and out of control. You can relax and read a book, watch a movie, enjoy a meal and arrive refreshed and ready to enjoy your holiday, rather than having to spend the first three days recovering from the stress of the flight.

Hypnotherapy for Fear of Flying

If you are considering hypnotherapy for your own travel anxiety, let me know:

  • What is your specific trigger? (Takeoff, landing, turbulence, feeling trapped, claustrophobia, heights or the weeks leading up to it?)
  • Have you ever tried other methods like tapping, self-hypnosis, or breathing exercises? I teach you some of these during your session, which are always a pleasant experience, and you should leave feeling excited and more positive.
